Cape May Stage Presents Separating the Men from the Bull

(Cape May, NJ) -– Cape May Stage, South Jersey's premier Equity theater, is pleased to present a hilarious evening sure to delight men, boys, men who act like boys, and the women who are forced deal with them: Separating the Men from the Bull. Part of Cape May Stage's acclaimed Second Stage Series, this testosterone-driven offering comes to Cape May from the Laurie Beechman Theatre as part of the Unofficial New York Yale Cabaret, a New York-based theatre company featuring graduates of the Yale School of Drama. Separating the Men from the Bull runs Monday, September 20th at 8pm at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse at the corner of Lafayette and Bank Streets in downtown Cape May.

Co-authors Neal Lerner and Daniel Jenkins (Broadway: Big River, Big), take on fourteen different characters throughout the course of ten vignettes, ranging from pre-teen boys with misconceptions about sex and love to full-grown men and bulls – yes, actual bulls – with misconceptions about sex and love. Basic male friendships are deconstructed: from their genesis in a "Friend Finder Department", implying that finding a friend can be distilled to an eHarmony-type questionnaire, to their conclusion following a hunting accident and the responsibilities males place on one another.

Talkin'Broadway.com says, "I laughed out loud and held my breath at tender moments. It's fragile and sweet, funny and sad. It's so original, you couldn't make it up if you tried; yet it rings true."

The production was workshopped over four years, some of the scenes being directed by Tony winner John Rando (Urinetown), culminating in a critically acclaimed production at the Jungle Theatre in Minneapolis directed by Artistic Director, Bain Boehlke. One scene, "Shooting the Bulls", was a finalist in the 10-Minute Play Contest at the Actors' Theatre of Louisville Humana Festival. This production, directed by Becky London, follows a well-received 4-week run off-Broadway at the Laurie Beechman Theatre.

Part of Cape May Stage's acclaimed Second Stage Series, Separating the Men from the Bull will run Monday, September 20th at 8pm at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse at the corner of Bank & Lafayette Streets in downtown Cape May. Tickets are $8. Call (609) 884-1341 for reservations and information or visit the theatre's website, www.capemaystage.com.

Cape May Stage's Second Stage Series is presented through the gracious support of Chris and Dave Clemans.

  1. Twelve years too late, let me correct whoever wrote this blurb on our play Separating the Men from the Bull; the play was written by Michael Heintzman and Neal Lerner. Danny Jenkins acted in this production, he did not write the play. Thanks! Michael H
