(New Brunswick, NJ) -- State Theatre and Attila Glatz Productions present the Beijing Symphony Orchestra with conductor Tan Lihua and soloist Tang Jun Qiao on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 8pm. The program includes Guo Wenjing's Lotus (Lianhua) Overture and Concerto for bamboo flute Desolate Mountain, and Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. A free Pre-Performance Insights lecture is available for this performance, one hour prior to show time at the United Methodist Church, located at 323 George Street. The State Theatre symphony series is sponsored by The Blanche & Irving Laurie Foundation. Tickets range from $35-70.
Principle Conductor Tan Lihua
Tan Lihua is the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra. He has previously acted as guest conductor for the Russian National Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also conducted China's most prestigious orchestras including the China National Symphony, China Philharmonic and Shanghai Symphony Orchestras. Lihua acts as Vice Chairman of the China Musicians Association, China Musicians Association Performing Arts Committee, Beijing Musicians Association, Chairman of the National Theatre Arts Committee, and is deputy director of the China Symphony Development Foundation.
Under his leadership, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra has gone on four critically acclaimed European tours and has recorded six albums since 2007. In 2008, Tan conducted the Beijing Symphony Orchestra to complete the recording of the newly updated versions of the National Anthems and Olympic Hymn for the Beijing Olympics.
Tang Jun Qiao, soloist
A modern master of the Chinese dizi (Chinese traditional flute), Tang Jun Qiao is considered one of the leading performers of traditional Chinese music. She currently holds the associate professor of Dizi post at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and also acts as the director of the All China Traditional Instrument Ensemble and the Macao Youth Ensemble of Traditional Chinese Instruments. Before starting her solo career, Tang was the principle flutist of the Shanghai Ensemble of Chinese Traditional Instruments. In 2007, she released a solo album titled Magical Flute of China.

Offering a wide range of performances in their unique Chinese style, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has garnered much praise recently under the leadership of Musical Director and Principal Conductor Tan Lihua. Having collaborated with many musical talents from all over the globe, the BSO has developed and promoted Chinese ethnic symphony music and successfully incorporated works from every period by different composers and from different nations. Their most famous performances have been part of the prestigious Beijing New Year Concerts in the Great Hall of People, an annual live national broadcast.
