Princeton Summer Theater's Crimes of the Heart opens July 4th
(PRINCETON, NJ) -- After closing its exuberant production of She Loves Me, Princeton Summer Theater immediately leapt into preparations for its next mainstage show, Crimes of the Heart, and its Children's Show, How Thumbelina Found Her Wings. Both plays promise the same vibrancy critics and audience so praised in She Loves Me ("rollicking, endearing" – Don Gilpin, Town Topics), though through very different stories and styles.
2012 Princeton Summer Theater Artistic Director Daniel Rattner returns to direct Beth Henley's Pulitzer-winning Crimes of the Heart. A fierce sense of humor and a poignant rendering of one family's trials and tribulations make this southern Gothic melodrama a true tour de force. The play is a day in the lives of the Magrath sisters of Hazlehurst, Mississippi. Things just can't seem to go right for these three women, from lightning striking Lenny's horse to Babe shooting her own husband. Over 24 hours, they realize the necessity of family in spite of its frustrations, challenges, and eccentricities. Performances are July 4th-14th, Thursday-Saturday at 8pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are $25 general, $20 for students. Enjoy a cupcake reception generously provided by Princeton's own House of Cupcakes to follow the Sunday, July 7th matinee of Crimes of the Heart!
How Thumbelina Found Her Wings is an original Children's Show devised by the 2013 PST Company. In this whimsical retelling of the beloved fairytale, PST invites you to join Thumbelina and her friends on an epic adventure jam-packed with imagination, smiles, and peanut butter. The Children's Show will perform July 4th-6th, 11th-13th, 25th-27th, August 1st-3rd, and August 8th-10th at 11am. Autograph sessions with the cast follow every performance!
This Friday, PST launches the 2013 Young Artist's Workshops series. Children aged 6-12 will work with the PST Company to explore a different area of theater each week, whether masks and puppets or stagecraft. All workshops are Fridays from 1:30-4:30, July 4th-August 9th. $35 per workshop, drop-ins welcome. Sign up for all six for $145 and save 30%! Register by emailing princetonsummertheater@gmail.com
