Former Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand, who suffered a severe spinal injury after making a tackle against Army last October, is nominated for the America's Choice Honor for Courage in Sports, Intersport announced today. The America's Choice Honor is wholly determined by fan voting and will be announced on a one-hour "Courage in Sports" special airing at 5 p.m. Nov. 13 on CBS.
Each week for eight weeks, two inspirational athletes will be featured on the Courage in Sports Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/CourageInSports). The top weekly vote-getter will proceed to the finals, which begins Oct. 17, and the overall winner will be announced as the 2011 America's Choice Honoree on CBS Nov. 13.
LeGrand was paralyzed from the waist-down after fracturing his C3 and C4 vertebrae, but the injury has not diminished his spirit. LeGrand is learning how to use his legs again, having recently shared a photo on his Twitter account of himself standing upright. A source of inspiration, LeGrand hopes to one day walk again.
To support LeGrand, fans can vote as often as they would like and can share their vote with Facebook friends. Week one voting opened today and ends Aug. 28 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
