(New Brunswick, NJ) -- The State Theatre announces the addition of 28 performances for 2011-2012, featuring a variety of dance, pop, Broadway, classical, family shows, holiday favorites, and more.
2011-2012 performance highlights include the world-renowned Mariinsky Orchestra with sought-after Conductor Valery Gergiev (10/4/11); Raw Dance Company in the high-energy, funk tap, hip-hop, and acrobatic show PROJECT X (11/4/11); The Rat Pack is Back! (10/22-23/11), a recreation of the free-wheeling, no-holds-barred nightclub act starring Vegas’ four favorite sons; Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (3/17/12); and the New Shanghai Acrobats (3/18/12).
CLASSICAL
This year’s classical series includes the Mariinsky Orchestra with Conductor Valery Gergiev (10/4/11); Hamburg Symphony Orchestra with Chief Conductor Jeffrey Tate (1/18/12), in their first U.S. appearance since 2007; St. Petersburg State Orchestra (2/12/12); and the Dresden Philharmonic with Principal Conductor Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos (3/9/12).
DANCE
Our dance series kicks off with a fall performance by Garth Fagan Dance, led by Tony(R) Award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan (10/1/11). Other dance performances include Raw Dance Company with an explosive show combining funk tap, hip-hop, acrobatics, and live music called PROJECT X (11/4/11); the fiery Compañia Flamenca Jose Porcel (11/12/11); Inbal Pinto & Avshalom Pollak Dance Company in OYSTER (2/1/12); Moscow Festival Ballet in Cinderella (4/6/11); Also, in a return engagement, the shape-shifting dance troupe, MOMIX in reMIX (4/20/11), a show that combines pieces from the MOMIX repertoire from over 25 years of work.
BROADWAY AND STAGE
Broadway shows this year include The Rat Pack is Back! (10/22-23/11), a recreation of the free nightclub act starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, and Sammy Davis Jr.; and the 12-time Tony(R) Award-winning musical, Fiddler on the Roof (2/17-18/12).
Also on stage, created from interviews with Iraqi refugees, is the play AFTERMATH (11/16-20/11). AFTERMATH tells the story of nine Iraqi people who lost their country in the six years since the United States invasion. Through the voices of those who suffered, the audience gets a glimpse into the realities of wartime and its innocent victims.
HOLIDAY
This holiday season brings a variety of pop, Celtic, and dance performances. Kicking off the holiday season is a performance by the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra& the Pied Pipers in "A Christmas Gift" (12/4/11). Other holiday fare includes Dave Koz and Friends in A Smooth Jazz Christmas (12/7/11), an uplifting, high-energy show for the whole family; Home for the Holidays with Brian Stokes Mitchell and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (12/9/11); My Mother is Italian, My Father is Jewish & I’m Home for the Holidays (12/11/11). Also returning this December, seasonal favorites American Repertory Ballet’s The Nutcracker (12/17-18/11) and Salute to Vienna – New Year’s Concert (12/31/11).
POPULAR
Concerts include Huey Lewis & the News (7/12/11); Shawn Colvin and Loudon Wainwright III (7/16/11); Glen Burtnik & Friends with Jersey Beatles Bash V (7/23/11); legendary guitarist, Tommy Emmanuel (9/17/11); and The Irish Rovers (3/11/12).
Also in the concert line-up, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (3/17/12) and the tribute concert, One Night of Queen (4/7/12) performed by Gary Mullen & The Works.
FAMILY
Family shows this year includes, direct from Beijing, The National Acrobats of China (11/6/11); three Family Day performances by Dan Zanes & Friends on Presidents Day (2/20/12); the New Shanghai Acrobats (3/18/12); and a State Theatre premiere performance by Red Star Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble (3/30/12).
